Peter Casey: From Judaism/Christianity to Islam

(this article is copy/paste-ed from NY Times)

Peter Casey, or AbdulMalik as he is known online, often rides a skateboard to the mosque and rarely thinks twice about performing his prostrations at a Starbucks. Mr. Casey, a 23-year-old recent Queens College graduate, does not do it out of a rebellious impulse to defy Muslim orthodoxy. Rather, he says he seeks to “challenge stereotypes and misconceptions” others have about his faith.
As a convert to Islam with a suburban upbringing and a Judeo-Christian background, Mr. Casey is in a rare position to do so. His boyish looks, clear blue eyes and pale white skin allow him to evade easy categorization from non-Muslims.
“I hope I can use it to my advantage,” said Mr. Casey, later adding that his own appearance forces people to reconsider their “notion about what a Muslim looks like, what a Muslim talks like, what a Muslim acts like.”

Mr. Casey was raised in a Long Island suburb with a Jewish mother and Catholic father. Growing up, he grappled with a divisive figure in the family: Jesus. On the one hand, Christianity spoke of a divine being, Son of God and God Himself. On the other, Judaism spoke of Jesus as a false messiah — if it spoke of him at all.
“I felt there were two extremes, and I was happy with neither,” Mr. Casey said.
And then, on Sept. 11, 2001, his understanding began to change.Paradoxically, it was an act of unprecedented terror that put this 13-year-old suburbanite on another path to religious consciousness. With Islam at the forefront of public discourse, Mr. Casey began to look beyond the headlines and into the faith, “out of caution” at first, he remembers. Online, he discovered a faith that recognized Jesus as a prophet, a man who relayed the word of God. Nothing more, nothing less.
“I was looking for the religion of Jesus and his disciples,” said Casey said. “And when I started learning about Islam I was like: ‘This is it. This is that religion.’ ”
Two years later, at 15 years old, he converted to Islam. (His parents declined to comment for this story or the accompanying video.)
Since then, Mr. Casey, who recently began teaching history at an Islamic school in Brooklyn, has sought to reconcile his religious beliefs within an American context suspicious of Islam. His blog, ‘Dawah Addict,’ hosts self-made videos on topics ranging from “Muhammad in the Bible” to “How to Become a Muslim.”
“When I first became Muslim, and this is something you still hear today, people said, ‘Why aren’t there more Muslims saying terrorism is bad? Why aren’t there Muslims out there saying what Islam is really about?’ ” said Mr. Casey. “And I thought, well, I’m going to do it if no one else is going to do it.”
Mr. Casey’s YouTube channel has more than 5,000 subscribers and close to half a million views. Although his audience keeps growing, he has also encountered some resistance, in the form of angry comments and rebuttals.
“I feel like I have responsibility to people in America,” he said, “because this is where I grew up and this is my home, and I want to share what makes me so happy and has brought me so much peace.”

A very nice song by Gabrielle Aplin.

HOME

I’m a phoenix in the water
A fish that’s learnt to fly
And I’ve always been a daughter
But feathers are meant for the sky
So I’m wishing, wishing further
For the excitement to arrive
It’s just I’d rather be causing the chaos
Than laying at the sharp end of this knife

With every small disaster
I’ll let the waters still
Take me away to some place real

'Cause they say home is where your heart is set in stone
Is where you go when you’re alone
Is where you go to rest your bones
It’s not just where you lay your head
It's not just where you make your bed
As long as we’re together, does it matter where we go?
Home Home

So when I’m ready to be bolder,
And my cuts have healed with time
Comfort will rest on my shoulder
And I’ll bury my future behind
I’ll always keep you with me
You’ll be always on my mind
But there’s a shining in the shadows
I’ll never know unless I try

With every small disaster
I’ll let the waters still
Take me away to some place real

'Cause they say home is where your heart is set in stone
Is where you go when you’re alone
Is where you go to rest your bones
It’s not just where you lay your head
It's not just where you make your bed
As long as we’re together, does it matter where we go?
Home, Home

The Loss of A Friend

Salam 'Alaik

Yesterday, I received a shocking news about a death of my beloved friend.

My cat, Cotton had this habit of following my dad to the Masjid every Fajr prayer. My dad always telling me how worried he is if Cotton might be hit by a car. Yesterday morning, as he walked his way to the masjid, he ended up being hit by one....The incident happened very fast, right before my dad's eyes that Cotton got hit. It was so sudden. After coming back from prayer, my dad picked his body with bare hands, still warm with blood all over his body lying motionless by the gate of the Masjid.

I only received this tragic news in the evening after my driving lesson. I was speechless, aghast, unable to utter a single word the next thing i knew tears streamed down my face instantly.

Cotton was almost being hit by my neighbour a few days before. I thought he was lucky  to have escape. It never crossed my mind that this would actually happened.

And Marble was there when Cotton was hit. She's been sleeping all day long today..Earlier this morning Marble entered my room and rubbed her face against mine while I was sleeping and meowed softly..I don't know if cats really do have feelings but I guess Marble is mourning the loss of her brother..It was so heartbreaking to accept the fact that she had lost a brother and a friend to play with..Marble is going to miss you too, Cotton.

"Let me groom you."

"I love you so much, brother!"

"Hey, Marble, help me up!"

"Get your stinky butt off me, Cotton.."

Cotton, I'm really gonna miss you waking me up in the morning with your loud annoying voice and how you rubbed your wet cold nose against my face. And how you sleep on your back with your feet hanging, it was so weird. Your lovely pink nose and your big round eyes and your huge white paws..and how your fluffy tummy felt so soft in my hands. How you messed up with my stuff, your soft purr when I stroked your head..I missed cuddling with you in my arms...You know what I remember the most about you? The day you were born. I remembered holding your little body, it fitted my hand perfectly. But today, I hadn't been given a chance to hold you, I'm sorry I wasn't there when you were gone but it's okay, Allah loves you more..and I have to do nothing but to accept it..oh and yesterday on my way home from driving class, I bought you a freshener fragrance spray because you always smelled horrible but I guess I'm just too late...I love you always and I'll cherish the times we've spent together.

Lovely big white paws I'll miss.

0h the pink nose and the wandering eyes.

I'm gonna miss this sleeping pose.

The last photo of Cotton that I've taken.

Cotton was more than a cat to me, he was the closest thing I had to a real friend. And I love him and will always do. You'll always be on my mind and heart.

DIY Vintage Button Badge

Do you have button badges that are old ,ugly and no longer usable? Well, if you are thinking to throw them away, NO, don't throw them away! Because I've came up with a glorious idea of how to give the unattractive looking button badge an extreme makeover to make your friends jealous and dying to have them! Just follow the steps below, and voila! you own yourself The Vintage Button Badge!

MATERIALS NEEDED:

Some unused, old button badges that you wish to get rid of.

Fancy and attractive looking fabric tapes. Bought these at Pustaka Rakyat at a reasonable price.

Lacy and stripy  fabric tapes. Bought these amazing guys at Daiso Japan.

Some washi tapes. Bought these at Daiso Japan too.

THE MAKING:

Step 1:
Using a knife, take off the back part of the button where the pin lies. Be careful, kids.

And you'll have two separate parts of the button. The one that you are going to decorate is the ones with no pin attached. (Duh, obviously)

Step 2:
Pick the tapes that you wish to use in your design, measure them on the button badge and then cut them.

Peel of the sticky part of the tape and just stick it on the button. Make sure there's no bubble trap or anything like that.

Oh, and make sure that when you measure the tape, it has to be longer than the actual size because you need the extra part to cover the edge of the button badge so it will look nice and secure.

This is how the edge of the button will look like.

This is how the inside part will look like.

Step 3:
After you are happy with your design and stuff, secure the back part of the button tightly. Press it hard until it is secured.

And voila! You're finished!

Step 4:
Clean your desk!

So that's it! You're done! And you're happy :)

If you're feelin' fancy you can use fabric cloth and cut out your own pattern/shape/design/etc to stick on your button. Let your mind flows with creativity!

I got this fabric from Daiso Japan. Each fabric is only RM 5!
Well basically everything in Daiso Japan is RM 5. So that's that.

Check out my other Vintage Button Badges designs! (With some edited vintage effect, lol)

The Resolutions of 2013

So, it's that time of the year again where most people -- including me, to make some New Year's Resolutions. I've never really make proper resolutions before. I kinda said, 'oh, this year I'm going to not eat this and that, eat this and that but don't eat that all the time" and eventually ended up failing the resolution. But this year, I'm going to make some serious New Year's Resolutions that I'm gonna do it for real. FOR REAL. (hopefully)

#1 GET A PROPER FITNESS ROUTINE
Now I'm pretty sure that this is a New Year's Resolutions of like 95% of people in this world. I mean come on, people eat. A lot. And when they do, they get fats all around their bodies. And they obviously want to get rid of it. So, this year, I'm teaming up with my mother and we are going to have a lot of fun together jogging around Tasek Cempaka (and have Nasi Lemak and Teh Tarik for breakfast afterwards.) I'm gonna stick to this routine and make it a part of my lifestyle. Also, I need to cut down eating sweet foods (although I find it quite difficult cause my teeth are sweet (i meant sweet tooth you silly little baby cubs)), chocolates and stuff. And the hardest part about this particular resolution will probably be eating more veggies. Now, some of you may not know, I despise veggies. The only veggies that I think taste kinda nice are brocolli , celery, and 'pucuk paku' ( is it fern in english? nope.) Other than these are unacceptable to my tongue. But, this year I will challenge myself to eat more green for the sake of a better health. :p

#2 BE MORE POSITIVE.
I happen to be a very negative person. When something bad or even good happened, I always look it on the worst side (probably because I have OCD. It's true, I have OCD. I took an online test on the internet and found out that I am likely to have OCD) I never try to look it on the other way around because I thought when you look at the worst side, you will be prepared for the unexpected bad things things that are going to happen. But it turned out that I was partially wrong. So, this year, I'm going to change my mindset be more positive, and make the best out of the bad.

#3 BE MORE PRODUCTIVE
In 2012, I waste a lot of my times just doing nothing and useless. Spending countless time on the Internet and something like that. This year or I like to call it "The Year Where I Will Change and Be A Better Person.",  I will become a more productive person and spend more time doing something that useful and at the same time enjoyable. Insha Allah! :D

#4 BE A MORE DEDICATED MUSLIM
It explains everything. I want to be a better muslim and dedicated more of time for my deen. (this actually includes #3)

So, I only have 4 resolutions this year which I will try to keep them throughout this year, if God willing! and hopefully I would have a great 2013! :D
